The pattern of structural changes induced in bull spermatozoa by oral or injected ethylene dibromide (EDB).

چکیده
Bulls treated with ethylene dibromide (EDB), either by oral administration of ten doses of 4 mg/kg body weight on alternate days or by a single intraperitoneal injection of 110 -2 mg of this compound into the fluid surrounding each testis, exhibited sperm malformations up to total disintegration of the sperm cells. The malformations appeared in the ejaculates collected about two weeks after the first oral dose or after the injection, and persisted for about one and two months after the last oral dose or the injection, respectively. It appears that ethylene dibromide interferes with the normal processes of spermiogenesis and sperm maturation.

Semen quality in papaya workers with long term exposure to ethylene dibromide.
To examine whether long term occupational exposure to ethylene dibromide (EDB) affects semen quality a cross sectional study of semen quality was conducted among 46 men employed in the papaya fumigation industry in Hawaii, with an average duration of exposure of five years and a geometric mean breathing zone exposure to airborne EDB of 88 ppb (eight hour time weighted average) and peak exposure...
متن کاملMetabolism of the soil and groundwater contaminants, ethylene dibromide and trichloroethylene, by the tropical leguminous tree, Leuceana leucocephala.
Ethylene dibromide (EDB; dibromoethane) and trichloroethylene (TCE) are hazardous environmental pollutants. The use of plants to treat polluted sites and groundwater, termed phytoremediation, requires plants that can both effectively remove the pollutant as well as grow in the climatic region of the site. In this paper, we report that the tropical leguminous tree, Leuceana leucocephala var. K63...
متن کاملO-12: Studies on Sequestration of PDC-109 Protein on Cryodamage and In Vitro Fertility of Crossbred Bull Spermatozoa
Background: Plasma membrane of the spermatozoa interacts with and is altered by abundant seminal PDC-109 present in their immediate milieu in vivo with damaging effect in a time- and concentration- dependent manner. Therefore we hypothesized that sequestration of detrimental protein from ejaculates would be beneficial for cryopreservation of sperm cells. To this aim we evaluated the effect of s...
متن کاملEthylene Dibromide Mineralization in Soils under Aerobic Conditions.
1,2-Dibromoethane (EDB), which is a groundwater contaminant in areas where it was once used as a soil fumigant, was shown to be degraded aerobically by microorganisms in two types of surface soils from an EDB-contaminated groundwater discharge area. At initial concentrations of 6 to 8 mug/liter, EDB was degraded in a few days to near or below the detection limit of 0.02 mug/liter. At 15 to 18 m...
متن کاملAnaerobic biodegradation of ethylene dibromide and 1,2-dichloroethane in the presence of fuel hydrocarbons.
Field evidence from underground storage tank sites where leaded gasoline leaked indicates the lead scavengers 1,2-dibromoethane (ethylene dibromide, or EDB) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) may be present in groundwater at levels that pose unacceptable risk. These compounds are seldom tested for at UST sites. Although dehalogenation of EDB and 1,2-DCA is well established, the effect of fuel hyd...
